Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi book review

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi book review Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. This is the second book from yaa gyasi that she's published. Her debut novel was homegoing, which is one of my all-time favorite books.  And i was very excited to see that she had a new book coming out. If for some reason you are watching this and you haven't read homegoing yet, just go pick that up.  That is a book that i can give sort of as a blanket recommendation to literally anyone in the world. So this book follows gifty who is of ghanian descent. She is at stanford medical school and she is working on her PhD.  And she's studying sort of the neurological impacts of depression and addiction. And this research is directly related to her own life and history.  Her mother suffers from depression and her brother died of a drug overdose when he was in like high school. So that's basically like all you need to know about this book, generally, in terms of like plot and synopsis.  This isn&

Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi Book Review

Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi Book Review  Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi   This is a debut novel that i believe came out earlier this year. And i'm going to be completely honest, i didn't know too much about this book  but i saw like this listed on my library's new releases, sort of, section of their website. And i like to just, you know, browse it for fun - as you do - and this cover just like immediately caught my attention.  And then david over at the poptimist i think either did an individual review of this book or he talked about this while talking about the giller prize, and i was like, okay, yeah, i definitely need to read this book.  So this is a story told from three different perspectives. There is kabarinachi who believes that she is this sort of like spirit being. And she believes that she is a spirit that plagues like her family and the people around her with like death and grief.  So there are a lot of different parts of the story

True Biz By Sara Novic Book Review

True Biz By Sara Novic Book Review True biz by sara novic this is one of my most anticipated books of the year, or at least the first half of the year. I'm going to be completely honest and say I don't really know what's coming out later this year.  But I saw that this was coming out this year and I was really excited because I read sarah novic's previous book, a girl at war, and I really, really enjoyed it. I'll link up in the cards, I think it was like one of my favorite books of the year that I read it. So I'll link a video up above if you want to check that one out.  But yeah, I really enjoyed that book and so when I heard that sara novic was coming out with a new book, I was excited. And then when I heard what the synopsis was or read what the synopsis was, I got even more excited.  So this book mainly takes place at river valley school for the deaf. And so you are mainly following three points of views. There is charlie who is someone who is deaf and she

Members Only by Sameer Pandya book review

Members Only by Sameer Pandya book review  Members Only by Sameer Pandya, So this is a really interesting book that kind of took me by surprise.  You are following this character named Raj Bhatt who was born in Bombay but then moved to the united states when he was a kid, like middle school aged or so. When the story begins, it's him as an adult.  He is married to a white woman and they have two kids. They've just moved back to California, which is where the wife is from.  And they have joined this sort of like local country club, tennis club. It's one that's like kind of exclusive in the sense that like they don't really let a whole lot of people in.  And part of the reason why they were let in is that the wife was a member of this club when she was growing up. And so the story starts off on a sunday. Raj is part of sort of like the tennis club committee of selecting who the new members are going to be.  So the way the tennis club works is that current members ca

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie  So first up i have thorn by intisar khanani. And this is a fantasy book that is also apparently a fairy tale retelling of this fairy tale called the goose girl, which i have literally never heard of before.  So i will not be talking at all about like the retelling aspect of it because i've never heard of this fairy tale before.  I also don't really know anything about fairy tales beyond the ones that were made into disney movies.  But as a young adult fantasy book, i really enjoyed it. However i also need to say that i'm the type of person who really enjoys young adult fantasy books that are like super slow-moving and like nothing really happens for a lot of the book and stuff like that.  So i recognize now after reading a bunch of different young adult fantasy books that my preferences in young adult fantasy very often don't align with other people.  So in this book you are following thi

Children of the Land by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo Book Review

Children of the Land by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo Book Review Children of the Land by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo. This is a memoir mostly. It's a piece of nonfiction and castillo is basically reflecting on his experience being an immigrant here in the united states.  He and his family crossed over the mexican border when he was really, really young. And the way that this book is pitched, it like talks about how when he crossed over the border, he like went blind and had this like really traumatic experience and things like that.  Which did happen to him, but that's not really the focus of this novel. This book is broken up into i think it's four parts and each part kind of focuses on a specific period of time in castillo's life.  And those events are kind of like centered usually around specific single events. So when the book opens you are presented with this experience that Castillo had of ICE raiding his home.  And he was living with his mother at the time and the

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review  Lucy and linh by alice pung it came out a number of years ago at this point. It was originally published in australia in 2014 and then came out in the united states in 2016.  And it's one of those books that i've had sitting on my like library tbr list that i keep for about that a lot amount of time, and i've been like slowly trying to chip away at that thing.  But yes, i was originally interested in this book because it hits a lot of ideas and themes that i really enjoy. It is set in australia and you are following this girl as she gets entrance into this really exclusive private school, all girls private school.  And so you follow lucy over the course of a single school year as she transfers to this new school and her experiences with it. So it's like a coming-of-age story, as you would expect, and it's also about sort of like the atmosphere and world inside of this private school.  There is like this group of girls calle

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review Dominicana by Angie Cruz. This is a new release. I think it comes out in like September 3rd or like early September. But it was actually released a little bit early through book of the month.  I usually am not great about reading my book of the month books right away all the time. But it was kind of just like sitting there and I had like a free day and I was like,  I'm just gonna grab this one because it's on the top of my multiple piles of unread books. And I was immediately hooked. So in this story you are following this girl named Ana CanciĆ³n and it starts off while she is 15 years old and living in the Dominican Republic.  And it takes place in like the 1960s. So yeah, she's about 15 years old and the story starts off with her talking about how basically she knows that her parents are going to force her to marry this specific man who is significantly older.  I think he's like in his 30s. And it's mainly because like it'
