Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha book review

Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha book review  Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha this is a pretty new release that came out this fall. It's kind of a mystery book but it's like a mystery book with a lot of like depth and history to it. So this story is loosely based on real life events and it specifically centers around Los Angeles, and there are two different timelines happening in this book.  One of them takes place in the 90s during the height of the LA race riots and the other one is a modern-day story line. And you're also following two different characters and families during those two points in time. So one of the characters that you are following is this woman named Grace Park.  She's probably in her like mid to late 20s if I had to estimate. She's a pharmacist so you know she's at least like gone through pharmacy school and things like that. She is of Korean descent, her parents are Korean immigrants.  And her and her family have sort of like a strained

All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg book review

All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg book review  All this could be yours by Jami Attenberg so this is a literary fiction family saga sort of story. You are following this family where the patriarch basically of the family named Victor is on his deathbed.  You're watching the different people in this family sort of grapple with that in different ways, particularly because Victor was a not great person. So there is his daughter Alex who flies out to where her parents are in New Orleans to be with-- by her mother's side.  But also she's there because she wants to find things out about her father and her family, find out the truth about her parents. Specifically she wants to kind of understand why her mother even stayed with him in the first place.  And then of course there is the mother Barbara who is working really hard to kind of ignore the questions that her daughter is berating her with, in her opinion, and just trying to deal with the situation at hand.  And then

There There by Tommy Orange Book review

There There by Tommy Orange Book review  There There by Tommy Orange. I read this book in June and I loved it so, so much. It is definitely one of my favorite books that I've read so far this year. So I knew I wanted to do an individual review for this book for you guys because it deserves it.  There There is a literary fiction book that has been kind of all the buzz if you follow a lot of like literary fiction readers and bloggers and writers and whatnot and it is for good reason.  It's a multi-generational novel and you are following 12 different characters all of whom are of Native American descent. It mainly takes place in and around the Oakland, California area. You follow these twelve characters as they all sort of converge on the big Oakland powwow that is going to be happening.  So I'm not really going to do a real detailed plot synopsis or go over like all of the characters in a whole lot of detail because, like most literary fiction books, while there is a plot,

The Mothers by Brit Bennett book review

The Mothers by Brit Bennett book review  The Mothers by Brit Bennett This is a book that I meant to review in November because I read this back in October. But I'm finally getting around to it and I wanted to make sure that i did a review of this book because I really enjoyed it. And I kind of wanted to talk a little bit about it because it's not a perfect book but it was a book that completely enraptured by attention.  So in the beginning of this book you are following this young girl in Nadia. She's around 17 years old at the beginning of the story. Her mother has recently died and so she is just going through the grieving process. She starts frequenting this local, I believe it's a diner or a coffee shop, something along those lines. While she's there she ends up getting the attention of one of the servers there who ends up being the local pastor's son.  They start sort of this secret relationship and then one day it turns out that Nadia's pregnant. So

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid Book review

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid Book review Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid Book this is a pretty new release. I think it came out around like December 31st, like right on New Year's Eve.  And I remember like reading the synopsis for this book and being like, "oh, that sounds really interesting. It's too bad it's coming out on New Year's Eve because I feel like it's going to get ignored more than it should. " But then it turns out that like everyone was reading this book at the beginning of the year and in January, or at least everyone in my like bookish circles was, and everyone was raving about it. So I was like, well I better push that one up on my list. So I did and I read it and I enjoyed it.  So this is a contemporary fiction book and you are following these two characters, Emira and Alex, or Ah-lex from the way they give the pronunciation of her name in that book.  Alex is a mom and she has recently moved from New York City to Philadelphia. She has two

The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo By Taylor Jenkins Reid Book Review

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa Book review

The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa Book review  The memory police by Yoko Ogawa and this is translated into English by — probably should've looked at this beforehand — Stephen Synder.  So this is a pretty new release. I think it just came out last month and I ended up picking this up partially because I was interested in it and partially because August was women in translation month.  And so I figured perfect time to pick it up. So this is a dystopian novel but I feel like calling it a dystopian novel kind of does it a disservice. Although it technically is one.  But I think calling it a dystopian puts a very specific idea into a reader's head, or at least it put a very specific idea into my head. So this story takes place on this unknown, unnamed Island.  The residents of this island live in a world where things are slowly disappearing. For example, at the beginning of the story, roses are no longer a thing. So the people on this island start to forget what roses are.  They for

Know My Name by Chanel Miller pdf download

Know My Name by Chanel Miller pdf download  Know My Name by Chanel Miller so this book came out last year. And over on book riot I made a video talking about the books that I like regretted not getting to last year.  I'll link that up in the cards in case you're interested in seeing that. But basically this is the number one book on that list. I was very sad that I didn't end up making time for this book last year.  And I'll kind of get into a little bit more later about why I didn't. But hearing everyone talk about it, especially as they you know put this book on their year-end best of lists and stuff like that, I realized I basically made a mistake.  I bought the audiobook of this last year but I just didn't get around to listening to it or I didn't make the time to listen to it. And so again, seeing everyone rave about this book at the end of last year made me want to really prioritize this one.  So I listened to it and I literally finished listening to

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review  Lucy and linh by alice pung it came out a number of years ago at this point. It was originally published in australia in 2014 and then came out in the united states in 2016.  And it's one of those books that i've had sitting on my like library tbr list that i keep for about that a lot amount of time, and i've been like slowly trying to chip away at that thing.  But yes, i was originally interested in this book because it hits a lot of ideas and themes that i really enjoy. It is set in australia and you are following this girl as she gets entrance into this really exclusive private school, all girls private school.  And so you follow lucy over the course of a single school year as she transfers to this new school and her experiences with it. So it's like a coming-of-age story, as you would expect, and it's also about sort of like the atmosphere and world inside of this private school.  There is like this group of girls calle

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie  So first up i have thorn by intisar khanani. And this is a fantasy book that is also apparently a fairy tale retelling of this fairy tale called the goose girl, which i have literally never heard of before.  So i will not be talking at all about like the retelling aspect of it because i've never heard of this fairy tale before.  I also don't really know anything about fairy tales beyond the ones that were made into disney movies.  But as a young adult fantasy book, i really enjoyed it. However i also need to say that i'm the type of person who really enjoys young adult fantasy books that are like super slow-moving and like nothing really happens for a lot of the book and stuff like that.  So i recognize now after reading a bunch of different young adult fantasy books that my preferences in young adult fantasy very often don't align with other people.  So in this book you are following thi

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review Dominicana by Angie Cruz. This is a new release. I think it comes out in like September 3rd or like early September. But it was actually released a little bit early through book of the month.  I usually am not great about reading my book of the month books right away all the time. But it was kind of just like sitting there and I had like a free day and I was like,  I'm just gonna grab this one because it's on the top of my multiple piles of unread books. And I was immediately hooked. So in this story you are following this girl named Ana Canción and it starts off while she is 15 years old and living in the Dominican Republic.  And it takes place in like the 1960s. So yeah, she's about 15 years old and the story starts off with her talking about how basically she knows that her parents are going to force her to marry this specific man who is significantly older.  I think he's like in his 30s. And it's mainly because like it'
