Vita Nostra by Marina Dyachenko & Sergey Dyachenko book review

Vita Nostra by Marina Dyachenko & Sergey Dyachenko book review Vita Nostra by Marina Dyachenko & Sergey Dyachenko this was a book that was originally published in Ukrainian and has recently been translated into English. It's a first book in a series, and I am very much hoping that they continue translating these books because I really enjoyed it. So this is a fantasy story and you are following this character named Sasha.  She is around sixteen, seventeen years old when the story starts. Her and her mother have gone off on like a beach vacation. And while she's there she keeps like noticing the strange man around. Like she'll see him around town and see him always sort of like nearby where they are.  Sometimes he's like looking directly at her, things like that. And so she just thinks he's like kind of a creep and tries to avoid him as much as possible.  But then they end up talking to each other and he tells her that he has a task for her and that is to e

Black Girl Unlimited by Echo Brown book review

Black Girl Unlimited by Echo Brown book review Black Girl Unlimited by Echo Brown  this book is described as like part memoir, part contemporary story with a bit of fabulism mixed into it all.  So in this story you are following a character named Echo Brown. She is a black girl growing up in I believe Cleveland, Ohio. She lives on the east side of town, which is like the poor side of town in a like basically all-black neighborhood. This story basically follows her over the course of like her like childhood through high school kind of. This is one of those books that's gonna be really hard for me to summarize, if that wasn't already apparent.  So the way this book is written it's almost as if someone is telling you the story of their life after they've already kind of grown up a little bit. And so she kind of just starts off talking about things that happened in her childhood.  Her mother was addicted. She didn't know who her biological father was. Her stepfather w

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review

Dominicana by Angie Cruz Book review Dominicana by Angie Cruz. This is a new release. I think it comes out in like September 3rd or like early September. But it was actually released a little bit early through book of the month.  I usually am not great about reading my book of the month books right away all the time. But it was kind of just like sitting there and I had like a free day and I was like,  I'm just gonna grab this one because it's on the top of my multiple piles of unread books. And I was immediately hooked. So in this story you are following this girl named Ana Canción and it starts off while she is 15 years old and living in the Dominican Republic.  And it takes place in like the 1960s. So yeah, she's about 15 years old and the story starts off with her talking about how basically she knows that her parents are going to force her to marry this specific man who is significantly older.  I think he's like in his 30s. And it's mainly because like it'

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review

Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung Book Review  Lucy and linh by alice pung it came out a number of years ago at this point. It was originally published in australia in 2014 and then came out in the united states in 2016.  And it's one of those books that i've had sitting on my like library tbr list that i keep for about that a lot amount of time, and i've been like slowly trying to chip away at that thing.  But yes, i was originally interested in this book because it hits a lot of ideas and themes that i really enjoy. It is set in australia and you are following this girl as she gets entrance into this really exclusive private school, all girls private school.  And so you follow lucy over the course of a single school year as she transfers to this new school and her experiences with it. So it's like a coming-of-age story, as you would expect, and it's also about sort of like the atmosphere and world inside of this private school.  There is like this group of girls calle

The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas book review

The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas book review The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas book Going into it I knew literally nothing about the three musketeers other than there were three musketeers. Like I didn't know what this plot was like, I've never seen or read or experienced any sort of adaptation of this.  So I legitimately had zero exposure to the three musketeers. So this whole experience with reading this book has been really interesting for me because I really didn't know what to expect. And I feel like what you get out of this book is not at all what you can infer from pop culture.  Like I'm the type of person where I pick up a lot of things about like classic movies and classic books just based on the way that people talk about it. And the way that people talk about the three musketeers feel so far off from this book. And I don't know if that's just because adaptations change it so much or what. But yeah, this this book is not at all what I th

The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino book review

The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino book review The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino this book and I decided to pick it up. And oh man, you guys, I loved it. So the story starts off with you following this character named Yasuko who is a divorced single mom.  And she thinks that she's finally gotten away from her ex-husband when all of a sudden he shows up at the restaurant that she works at. So every time he shows up he's like trying to get back together with her.  And in the past she has just like given him money basically to make him go away. And this time she's like trying to get rid of him without like having to do that or like having any sort of association with him.  But he's like threatening to go and find their daughter who's at school and like going and approaching her. He was an abusive ex-husband and all of this stuff and so she's been basically on the hideout for-- from him for a while. So she basically tells him to get lost.  And

Good Talk by Mira Jaco Book Review

Good Talk by Mira Jaco Book Review  Good Talk by Mira Jaco this book mira jacob is exploring a lot of different topics. A lot of them revolving around identity and specifically like american identity, racial identity, things along those lines. But also things like parenthood and her life growing up and sort of how that's formed how she views things now and those sorts of things. So the story begins with her having a conversation with her son who is biracial.  Her husband is jewish american man. Her son is asking questions about his own identity, about really like sort of basic in terms of like surface level what he's looking for sort of questions, but questions that are really complicated to answer. So things about like skin tones and people's races without specifically saying those things. So he's asking like whether or not like his other biracial friends that he knows are similar to him or not. He starts asking questions about like michael jackson because he was rea

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie book review His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie  So first up i have thorn by intisar khanani. And this is a fantasy book that is also apparently a fairy tale retelling of this fairy tale called the goose girl, which i have literally never heard of before.  So i will not be talking at all about like the retelling aspect of it because i've never heard of this fairy tale before.  I also don't really know anything about fairy tales beyond the ones that were made into disney movies.  But as a young adult fantasy book, i really enjoyed it. However i also need to say that i'm the type of person who really enjoys young adult fantasy books that are like super slow-moving and like nothing really happens for a lot of the book and stuff like that.  So i recognize now after reading a bunch of different young adult fantasy books that my preferences in young adult fantasy very often don't align with other people.  So in this book you are following thi
