Book Review:
Science of the Soul why do some people emerge stronger from painful situations and some others succumb to it it is impossible to come up with a scientific answer to this question under normal circumstances because each of our experience is unique and distinct however there was one time in history
when millions of people were put through the same horrible torture and suffering in nazi concentration camps dr victor frankel a psychiatrist who was also imprisoned in one such camp got a unique vantage point to observe
how different people responded to the same trauma he discovered something truly profound about the source of our mental strength welcome to temple's books and science today i want to talk to you about the book
man's search for meaning returned by dr viktor frankl a jewish psychiatrist who developed a groundbreaking method for treating mental illnesses from his experience in a nazi concentration camp he used
this method to help hundreds of his fellow inmates to handle unspeakable trauma and suffering inflicted on them this therapy which we call logo therapy is based on the principle that lot of our mental illnesses and even physical ailments is because of a lack of purpose in our lives people
who feel that their life has a meaning and purpose can survive the biggest trauma dr frankel says a person who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how this comes not only from his observations of other inmates
but also from his own experience at one of his lowest moments at the camp he forced himself to think of what he would do when he is freed he imagined himself on a podium giving a lecture on the psychology of the concentration camp this way he felt like he was observing his pain from
a distance like a scientist he started writing a book while he was still in the concentration camp on little scraps of paper he could find this gave him a sense of purpose which provided him strength to handle the extreme hardships of the camp there is nothing in the world more effective to help us survive even the worst of conditions than the knowledge that
there is meaning to our life says dr frankl the modern notion that a good life is a happy and stress-free life is fundamentally wrong a good life is a purposeful life where you strive for something larger than yourself only when people lose their inner hold on their moral and spiritual self they fall victim
to trauma i was reminded of the poem that nelson mandela used to read every day which gave him strength during his long years of imprisonment it matters not how straight the gate how charged with punishments this crawl i am the master of my fate i am the captain of my soul another thing that
gives a lot of meaning to our life is love dr frankl says that it was in the concentration camp he understood the power of love and why all the philosophers and poets claim that the salvation of a man is through love those who retain their capacity to love deeply and unconditionally
find a hidden reserve of strength loving another person at its most real is a truly spiritual experience finally he says suffering itself can be meaningful it is possible to find meaning in hopeless situations like being imprisoned in a concentration camp or being diagnosed with an incurable
disease or a loss of a loved one dr frankel gives the example of a man he met in the camp who made a pact with god that he will willingly go through suffering and even death so that his wife and children are spared from
a painful end for this man his suffering and death became meaningful there is a common notion even among psychiatrists that people are meant to be happy and unhappiness is a sign of male adjustment it makes people ashamed of being unhappy but very often in life sorrow is unavoidable
if you accept the challenge to suffer bravely life has meaning till the very end dr frankel was able to help many people in the concentration camp with these insights the nazis had made a cruel rule that no one was allowed to stop a person who's attempting to commit suicide he had to make
sure that people don't get to the point where they try to kill themselves through his counseling he helped people find meaning even in those hopeless circumstances and saved hundreds of lives dr frankel says ultimately a man should not ask what the meaning of life is but rather he must recognize that it is he who is being asked each man is being questioned
by life and he can answer to life by answering for his own life to me the most important message of this book was this one thing which no one can take away from you is the freedom to choose how to respond to a situation everything can be taken away from you but not your attitude
i want to end with another verse from invictus the poem that gave strength to mandela in his darkest stars out of the night that covers me black as the pit from pole to pool.
